Anodization: A Promising Nano-Modification Technique

چکیده

As one of the valve metals (including Ti, Al, Ta, Nb, V, Hf, W), titanium is protected by a thin titanium oxide layer which spontaneously forms on its surface when exposed to air or other oxygen containing environments. This oxide passive layer is typically 2 to 5 nm thick and is responsible for the well-documented corrosion resistance property of titanium and its alloys. Because of this and their excellent mechanical properties, titanium and its alloys are widely used in orthopedic and dental applications. However, the native TiO2 layer is not bioactive enough to form a direct bonding with bone, which means the lack of osseointegration to juxtaposed bone might lead to long term failure after implantation. Specifically, the 10 to 15 year lifetime of current titanium-based orthopedic implants is not as long as expected by many patients. 3 As a result, many attempts have been made to improve the surface properties of titanium-based implants (e.g., topography, chemistry and surface energy), which directly determine the implant-environment interactions after implantation. These surface modification techniques include mechanical methods (e.g., sand-blasting), chemical methods (e.g., acid etching), coatings (e.g., plasma spraying), etc. Through these conventional approaches, a better bonding ability with bone has been achieved due to the creation of a optimum micro-scale surface roughness, a more favorable surface chemistry, and/or a new morphology preferred by bone-forming cells (or osteoblasts). However, neither these mechanical nor chemical methods have the ability to produce controlled surface topographies. Moreover, these methods have the of Titanium-based Implants for Orthopedic Applications

Increased Osteoblast Adhesion on Nano-rough Anodized Titanium and CoCrMo

One approach to improve biological properties of current titanium and CoCrMo implant is to mimic the nanostructures of bone. Surface modification via anodization is popular to create such nanometer surface features on these metallic implants. The objective of the present study was to anodize titanium and CoCrMo and then determine osteoblast adhesion on such materials. Hydrofluoric acid was used...

Developing of Corrosion Resistance Nano Copper Oxide Coating on Copper using Anodization in Oxalate solution

Copper alloys are widely used in the manufacturing of heat transfer applications, this due to their excellent heat transfer properties. Copper contamination is one of the serious industrial problems in the boiler feed water system. This contamination commonly resulted from copper corrosion reactions in boiler feed water environment. The best way to reduce the copper contamination is by improvin...

Synthesis and Characterization of Silver and Gold Nano-Structures on Chitosan-Porous Anodic Alumina Nano-Composite

This study was designed to probe the fabrication of unique silver and gold nano-structures engaging a self-designed chitosan-porous anodic alumina nano-composite as a template. Porous anodic alumina has been manufactured by di-step aluminum anodization in an oxalic acid electrolytic bath. The surface properties of porous anodic alumina were reinforced by chitosan neutralized in sodium hydro...

Self-ordered anodic aluminum oxide formed by H2SO4 hard anodization.

The self-ordering of nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) in the course of the hard anodization (HA) of aluminum in sulfuric acid (H2SO4) solutions at anodization voltages ranging from 27 to 80 V was investigated. Direct H2SO4-HA yielded AAOs with hexagonal pore arrays having interpore distances D(int) ranging from 72 to 145 nm. However, the AAOs were mechanically unstable and cracks formed a...
